In the late hours of Monday, August 14, 2023, a big rig truck crashed into the center divider on Interstate 80 in Emeryville, California. As a result, eastbound lanes were closed for several hours and westbound lanes were also blocked so responders could clear the scene of the accident. The crash took place east of Powell Street and involved at least three other vehicles. One person suffered significant injuries according to California Highway Patrol officers.
In addition, at least 20 gallons of gas leaked out of the big rig, which was a UPS vehicle, onto the highway. Thankfully, no drainages were affected by the leak, although it did take some time to clean up the highway following the crash.
The highway was reopened to traffic in both directions around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. According to the CHP website, “The California Highway Patrol remains committed in keeping the public safe everywhere.”[i] If you witness an accident or are a victim of an accident, always reach out to 911 and report the details.
