On Friday, September 16, 2022, third-grader Jacob Villanova and his babysitter were struck by a motorist while walking to school near the intersection of Castlemont Avenue and Driftwood Drive in San Jose, California. Jacob, only 8 years old, was a student at Castlemont Elementary School.

San Jose police reported that the collision happened around 8:02 a.m. while children were walking to school. They also confirmed that Jacob and the woman walking with him were within a marked crosswalk when a woman driving a 2022 Mercedes crashed into them.

Jacob and his babysitter were taken to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, Jacob succumbed to his injuries two hours after the incident. His babysitter was admitted to the hospital with moderate injuries.

KTVU reports that this incident marks San Jose's 49th traffic fatality and 26th pedestrian death of 2022.

Our condolences go out to the family of Jacob Villanova.
