A retired former track coach and history teacher from Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa was killed last Thursday afternoon in an 11-vehicle crash that prompted the closure of a stretch of Highway 12 on the western edge of Santa Rosa. His vehicle was the first one struck. According to CHP officer David deRutte, the chain-reaction crash was started when the driver of a dump truck failed to brake behind traffic. This incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 12 and Fulton Road.
Several other people, including the driver of the dump truck, were taken to the local hospital for minor to moderate injuries. Of the 11 vehicles, about 5 of them had major damage. One of the vehicles caught fire and the flames spread to at least one other vehicle on the scene.
The westbound lanes of Highway 12 between Stony Point and Fulton roads were shut down for approximately four hours.
