Bianca Orozco, of San Jose, is alleged to have intentionally driven into a group of protestors with her SUV on May 29th, during the first night of demonstrations following the death of George Floyd. Orozco, 26, has been arraigned on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of hit and run. She has also been charged with child endangerment, as her two-year-old son was in the vehicle. The incident occurred at the intersection of Santa Clara and Sixth streets around nine p.m.
Orozco told police that she approached the demonstrators in her Dodge Durango and told them to get out of her way, but instead, then surrounded her. A sheriff’s deputy at the scene at the time of the incident reported seeing the vehicle make a u-turn, then reverse at high speed. Two men were run over during the incident and taken to the hospital and released with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
As the vehicle fled the scene, a deputy shot a single round, hitting the Durango. Orozco confirms a bullet struck her car but did not report this finding to the police upon returning home, claiming a state of shock prevented her from immediate action. She was unhurt by the bullet.
A San Jose police officer stationed at the protest was able to record the SUV’s license plate, which enabled detectives to find both the car and Orozco at a local residence. She was then arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail.
Orozco claims she was not aware that she hit anyone until seeing the incident on social media minutes after returning to the residence.
The incident remains under investigation. If convicted, she faces up to 12 years in prison.
